final final

The effects of learning the writer's tools

1.      Finishing the online course Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of Trade has given me skills that go beyond the ability to create sentences that are a pleasure to read, it has also resulted in the realization that limited time is not a limiting factor.
2.      Self-discipline and time management, necessary to complete this course, are skills I have lacked in many aspects of my life.
3.      This course has shown that many things can be accomplished within the confines of limited time.
4.      The methodical development a paragraph not only creates a better product, it saves time in the long run.
5.      It's the understanding of sentence structure that affords a faster way to fix a clumsy sentence, rather than rely on intuition or if it sounds right.
6.      Successful writing through organization of thoughts and concepts leads to improved verbal communication as well.
7.      In the past, I have written radio and television commercials based almost entirely on a major element of successful writing, reading out loud what I have written.
8.      By default, it had to be that way since my written words were recorded and played back.
9.      Reading aloud is one of the most powerful revision tools I have learned over time, and this course has reinforced the importance of that tool.
10.  I will always use this element of writing when crafting sentences and paragraphs that are not necessarily meant to be spoken.
11.  The long term effects of this course will be felt as I begin writing magazine articles and especially my memoirs.
12.  Sharing my knowledge of earth science through the written word in a concise, clear, and engaging manner is a goal I hope to achieve; this course has brought me closer to that objective.
13.  Another major result of this course is the newly gained knowledge of the language of English sentence structure; when I look for help in writing, I now understand what is meant by an adjective subordinate clause.
14.  The ability to learn a new subject relies on knowing its glossary of terms, because how can one gain greater knowledge without knowing the language of the subject.
15.  Before I leave this earth, I hope to share my experience of life with my kids, grandkids, and beyond through the written word, my ultimate goal.
17.   Immortality is not living forever on this earth; it is living forever through the written word
18. Passing along knowledge is the essence of being human; and through the skills of writing, I can pass along wisdom I have gained, the adventures I have lived, and the joy of life I have felt
19.  This course has provided me with skills beyond the writing of a sentence; it has helped me develop time management, organization of thoughts, and confidence in what I have learned in the past as well as future writing with my newly attained skills.

week 4

CLAUSES

ADJECTIVE CLAUSES

The storm clouds that were building over the mountains are slowly dissipating.
The mountains, whose slopes are barren of snow, are begging for precipitation.
Birds that are not native to the Owens Valley fly through every spring.
Tourists who travel in the spring choose Bishop as their destination.
Bishop, which is a very old town, actually has a K-Mart.

ADVERBIAL CLAUSES

The rivers flood because there are no dams.
Rather than swim in the hot valley, people like to visit the cool mountains.
Valley residents enjoy collecting arrowheads, even though it is illegal.
My friend drove into the mountains on his motorcycle after he fixed its flat tire.
People in Bishop own trucks in order to drive on dirt roads.

PHRASES

PREPOSITIONAL
The deer, grazing in the field, were oblivious to our presence.
Because they were wet, the dogs wanted to get out of the cold.

ABSOLUTE
The traffic was heavy, cars honking as they went nowhere.
The mountains grew darker, the sun sinking behind the now silhouetted ridges.

APPOSITIVE
The  trailer, an older pop-up model, is the pride and joy of the seasoned vacationer.
A confident swimmer, Ted attempted to across the icy cold lake.

VERB PHRASES

INFINITIVE
To climb the rock,  Fred had to gather his courage.
Rock climbers rely on assistants to hold the rope at the bottom of the cliff.

PARTICIPIAL
Battered by the wind, the climbers retreated from the summit.
Knowing they were running out of time, they quickly touched the summit and headed back down.

The mountains, whose slopes are barren of stockpiled snow, are begging for precipitation.  Storm clouds that were building atop the peaks sadly began to dissipate.  Rivers below the peaks usually flood because there are no dams, but they are not needed when there is little rain.  So rather than attempt to swim in tiny creeks in the hot valley, people visit the cool mountains.  Deer, grazing in the mountain’s, are oblivious to the presence of human visitors.  Trucks, those with high clearance, are the only types of vehicles that can safely travel in some of the grazing areas.  To climb the steepest roads, four wheel drive trucks are the only way to go. Those who are battered by the rough and rocky roads, sometimes wear kidney belts to make the trip.  Some valley residents never visit the mountains, and that is a shame.  Bob and Paula are the very few who do not have a truck, nor do they own a motorcycle, and they will; they do like to hike though, and visit the slope of the mountains barren of snow.
